Mystics & Poets Series | May-August 2019

Over the next 4 months we will cover 4 poets: Rumi, Mary Oliver, Thomas Merton and Rabindranath Tagore.

Poets have an elegant way of using language to express the sacred. Their poems have the power to trigger experiential sublime insights. You might agree that great poetry has a way of speaking directly to the heart and soul. It can spark a feeling of wholeness, to help correct the broken or dis-“eased” places that are deep inside every one of us. Poetry even has a way of radically changing views of the world and our story in it. Anything that can help us do this is valuable to the human spirit.

This Month’s Poet:

This month we will discuss and meditate on the words of Rumi.

During the 13th century Rumi was a Persian poet and top Islamic scholar and theologian. Today he is the best selling poet in the United States. His inspirational quotes are profound and timeless.

Host: Maria Fregeau

Event Details:

To be at peace is to live in harmony with everything and everyone around you. It is total freedom from fear and resistance. But, in order to truly be at peace you have to find peace within. You may often find your outer world gets chaotic and feels out of balance. You may be trying to change your external circumstances to find peace, but find that nothing ever lasts long term. You will never find peace externally, if you are lacking it internally.

Meditation is a tool used to cultivate inner peace.

It is a way to practice focusing on the present. It’s a practice of acknowledging any regrets you may have had about the past or worries you may have about the future, accepting them without judgement and gently letting them go.

Sometimes in our busy lives we struggle to find the time or the “right place” to relax and sink deeply into our meditation. Group meditation can be extremely powerful in this case. Meditating as a group strengthens the mana of the practice. We support each other and remember that it is OK to “fall off” our practice, because we can always start again together.

Meditation For Peace is a monthly gathering created for you to work on cultivating your own inner peace. It is a place suitable for anyone, whether you are just starting out, have an intermittent practice or practice daily.

About Ivie Cornwell:

Ivie Cornwell was introduced to yoga in 2007 when she moved to Oahu. Through focused breath work, dynamatic movement, and long held poses, her physical, emotional, mental and energetic layers began to open and she discovered the incredible healing potential the practice had to offer. Yoga has been instrumental in helping her recover from a back injury and two cesareans within two years. It has improved her flexibility and helped her heal physically as well as energetically. After receiving a master’s in education in 2010, Ivie saw the benefit of the practice in the classroom. She became YogaEd certified and worked with the Farrington High School cross country team to teach middle school students at Kaimuki. And in 2018 she completed the Aloha Kula Yoga teacher training program. You can practice with Ivie at Aloha Yoga Kula in Kailua and find her collaborating at Yoga Unplugged events.

About Jennifer Reuter:

Jennifer discovered yoga in 1998, after receiving her first copy of the Bhagavad Gita, and has been passionately inquiring yogic philosophy ever since. She studies extensively with many different teachers finding great value in exploring every style yoga has to offer. For 10 years she formally studied deep tantric meditation and was initiated as an “acharya” and authorized teacher of Neelakantha Meditation by Blue Throat Yoga. She’s also a level 2 certified Irest yoga nidra teacher. Jennifer has been leading teacher trainings and advanced yogic studies since 2009. You will find her classes, lectures and retreats “interdisciplinary” inviting both ancient and modern day tools. Her teachings are intelligent, pragmatic and always heartfelt. Jennifer is the founder of Yoga Unplugged, a platform that brings teachers and healers together to host events and trainings. She believes that collaborating enables her to offer a wider variety of philosophies, teaching styles and healing modalities to her students and envisions a day when Yoga Unplugged is a brand that doesn’t just belong to one person, but to many people spread across the world with the same core purpose.

Meditation Immersion: The Path of Awakening

Meditation Immersion: The Path of Awakening

The word “awakening” is often used in a way that it sounds like an extraordinary rarified achievement. The esoteric can be alluring yet baffling and it can cause the average person to feel confused and/or stuck. But as many traditions teach, “awakening” is an “open secret” and itʻs available to everybody.

The problem is that we don’t normally perceive awakening because we are still identified with our thinking, feeling, and bodily sensations.

As Thomas Merton once said, “Life is this simple: we are living in a world that is absolutely transparent and the divine is shining through it all the time. This is not just a nice story or a fable, it is true.”

Through the practice of meditation we are able to experience this truth. Meditation teaches us that awakening is a process and that it is not necessarily “exotic ”but in fact is just the simplicity of our being.

Meditation is a practical tool and accessible to all. By learning how to quiet the mind one experiences the true meaning of “awakening,” which is the natural movement towards more well-being, bliss and connection.

This immersion is open to all levels. It will include discussion, mindfulness based asana and various techniques to help quiet the mind.

Topics include:

- Meditation as a path towards awakening and knowledge of one’s self

- Meditation as a spectrum: exploring different practices and their effects

- Misperceptions about meditation

- The effects meditation has on the brain, body, sleep, emotions and nervous system

- Science-backed research of why and how meditation works

- Meditation teachings taken from yoga and other mystical traditions

Meditation practices will include:

Silence, Mindfulness, Kriyas, Breathing, Yoga Nidra, Compassion, Blessings, Gratitude, Journaling

Schedule:

Sunday, Aug. 18th - 12:30pm-4:30pm

Yoga Nidra And Sankalpa Sakti
Apr

to Apr 14

Yoga Nidra And Sankalpa Sakti

In our daily lives, we rarely experience true rest—the kind of rest that enables our bodies to restore and repair as they are meant to. Approximately 70 million people in the U.S. suffer from some form of sleep disorder, which means that even as we sleep, we are not finding the balance our bodies need to achieve homeostasis. As we normalize stress, fatigue, and imbalance, we experience different levels of illness.

Yoga nidra or “yogic sleep,” a sleep-based meditation using breath, relaxation, and visualization, offers healing and true balance. Its effects address physical, mental, and spiritual dis-ease, and it has been used successfully to treat PTSD, addiction, and ADHD. As a yogic practice, it allows us to release deeply embedded and unconscious patterns and become more fully who we are.

This training is open to all students regardless of skill level or practice. You’ll experience firsthand the effect of yoga nidra and learn its foundations as well as how to conducts sessions for individuals and groups.

Schedule:

April 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13 & 14 2019

Through years of continuous study and personal practice, Lisa has developed a unique eclectic style. Her teaching integrates her rehab, dance and fitness background, and she enjoys challenging and inspiring her students  to move with grace and efficiency in their bodies. Meditation For Peace

This Month’s Theme:

This month we continue exploring the teachings of Kriya Yoga and how it applies to meditation.

Tapas, or self-discipline, will be our focus at this event.

This will also be our first Meditation For Peace hosted by Aloha Yoga Kula owner and Yoga Unplugged team member, Brigitte Snyder.

Brigitte Snyder’s love of yoga began in 1990 after the blissful experience of her first savasana in a class taught by Brian Kent. Living in Los Angeles at the time, she was introduced to meditation in 1992 through the writings of Paramahansa Yoganada, and studied yoga with one of his devotees daily for over two years. She has done extensive training since then including studying with master teachers Mancuso Manos, Shiva Rea, Eric Shiffmann, Mary Dunn, Ramanan Patel, Rodney Yee and B.K.S. Iyengar. She has also completed two Anusara Immersion programs and is the co-owner of Aloha Yoga Kula in Kailua, Hawaii. Brigitte’s classes are a joyful journey. She mixes the fluidness and creativity of vinyasa with the precision and alignment of Iyengar.

Meditation For Peace is a monthly gathering created for you to work on cultivating your own inner peace. It is a place suitable for anyone, whether you are just starting out, have an intermittent practice or practice daily.

This event includes:

  • 20 min: Inspirational and educational talk on meditation

  • 20 min: Pranayama + Seated meditation practice

  • 30 min: Sound healing

Relax And Roll

*Tickets for this event will be sold at the door*

Self-Care for the holidays - Myofascial Release + Yoga Nidra

Before the holidays get into full swing come roll and relax with Gwynn Ellicott and Jennifer Reuter.

Learn two self-care practices that you can use at home to get you through the holidays, and throughout the year to increase your overall well-being!

Gwynn will teach us about Myofascial Release Therapy and how to use Yoga Tune-Up Balls. This helps to relieve the hidden tension in your connective tissues that are inhibiting mobility.

Decreased mobility, stagnation and sedentary conditions can increase risk for injuries, and the circulation and communication networks of the body can become compromised, which leads to more fatigue and dullness.

Working with Myofascial Release increases mobility, circulation and increases energy.

Jennifer will then teach us about the powerful lying down meditational practice of Yoga Nidra. This practice not only recharges the body and mind but has been shown to increase dopamine by 65%. Dopamine is one of the central power-drivers for all of the work your brain does. From memory to learning, to being motivated, paying attention and being HAPPY. Yoga Nidra creates bliss for your brain.

Price: $20

Event details:

9:00-9:15am: Introduction to Myofascial Release

9:15-9:45am: Practice using Yoga Tune-Up Balls

9:45-10:30am: Yoga Nidra + Gratitude Practice

Overstimulation and stress can dull the senses…

and like feeling lost in a bare, empty desert, can make you feel dried out…struggling hard to navigate…because everything starts to look the same.

This feeling of dryness can manifest mentally, spiritually and physically.

Mentally, our mind becomes fatigued and stagnant. Overtime our creative ideas start to dry up.

Spiritually, our lack of inspiration can lead us to feeling isolated and in need for support and guidance.

Physically, our muscles get tight and our skin becomes dry and flaky.

When this occurs, we know it is time to seek balance.

Going on retreat is like finding an oasis in a dry, boundless desert.

As you immerse yourself into the nourishing water you become revived, and reconnected with your own internal oasis, that has always been there all along.

As the waters of your being begin to flow once more, new insights, creativity and knowledge return.

We realize that we were never alone, and discover again the interconnectedness we have with all beings.

Our bodies feel re-energized, vibrant and full of vitality.

The lushness and fertility, that the oasis provides, reveals our true potential.

To be our most capable selves, we must continue to find our oasis in the repetitiveness of the empty desert that can sometimes be our lives.

We invite you to come find your oasis..

with us…this October…at Desert Waters

Offerings will include:

  • Yoga Asana

  • Yoga Nidra

  • Meditation

  • Myofascial Release

About The Location:

Desert Hot Springs is a town, just outside of Palm Springs, in the Coachella Valley. It is  a mecca for resorts, spas, golf courses and boutique hotels, and most famous for their natural mineral hot springs – one of the only places in the world to have both hot and cold. Fun fact, this was the first city in Southern California to allow the commercial growing of marijuana. What is known in Southern California as “Santa Ana winds”, produce hot, dry weather in the fall. These winds can go from breezy to intensely strong at times. The temperatures in October can be hot during the day getting up into the 90’s and cool down into the 60’s at night.

Getting there:

Palm Springs International Airport – 20 min.(average)

Los Angeles International Airport – 2 ½  hours (average)

San Diego International Airport – 2 hours 20 minutes (average)

Shadow & Light: An Afternoon Of Rewarding Self-Care

Yoga, Meditation & Sound Bath + Lunch at Fete

It is our belief, that every one of us hold both shadow and light.

Soften the “armor” that has built up around your body.

Open up your body so you can shine a light on some of the shadows you may have. These shadows can be unconscious thought patterns and/or positive things about yourself, that you haven’t fully embraced yet.

This practice will celebrate the light that is already present, and possibly even highlight the forgotten, dormant shadows that are overlooked

Sarah’s asana practice will focus on opening up the heart and shoulders with backbends, hip openers and grounding postures that activate the parasympathetic nervous system.

From there, you will be invited to lay back, as Jennifer guides you through a nourishing yoga nidra meditation practice and sound bath using Tibetan singing bowls.

Immediately following the event we will walk across the street to Fete where, local chef and fellow yogi, Robynne Mai’i will prepare us a simple, yet elegant lunch prepared with local ingredients.

Meditation For Peace

This month's theme is:
Shadow & Light: Welcoming the Fall

It's time to slooooowwwww down…

This month we will honor the Fall season and the opportunities it brings for spiritual growth and self improvement.

Even in Hawaii the changing of the seasons impacts us energetically. As you welcome in the Fall, saying goodbye to long summer days, there is an energetic invitation to slow down and go within. Take advantage of this natural planetary rhythm, so you can literally, “fall back on yourself” in order to gain a greater understanding of your own personal "shadow and light”.

The power of “shadow and light” work can not be underestimated. If you are to be an extraordinary, successful human being, you will need to be able to recognize and understand your own personal shadow and light.

Meditation is the supreme tool for accessing these teachings.

This session will include pranayama and insights on how you can discover and understand your own shadows and light using meditation. It is followed by a harmonic sound bath in your favorite restorative posture.

Event Description:

Jennifer Reuter has been practicing meditation for over 10 years. She is an expert in teaching the concepts and techniques of this practice, and begins each event going over these in full detail, often sharing some personal insights along the way.  She guides you into your meditation from a place of love and compassion.

At the end of your silent meditation, you will be guided to lie down and relax while Jennifer presents the vibrational sounds of the gong, quartz bowls and chimes in a centering yogic sound bath.

  • 30 min: Sound bath

$15 at the door (walk ins welcome)

Sequencing is one of the most influential ways in which you will shape your students prana in class. An intelligent sequence will leave you feeling balanced, re-energized, and full, a poorly sequenced class can leave you feeling agitated, anxious, tired, exhausted, and dull. In this training we will look at various Principles of Sequencing including focal points, adjustments, energetics, long-term health, ease, stability and much more.

Some of the questions we will address in this training are:

How can we best sequence a class to who is in front of us?

Various class blueprints.

How to sequence based on theme, or bhavana.

How to create maximum stability and ease in our class.

How to work and structure a class around the 5 prana vayus.

What are ways to both open and close a practice for lasting effects.

What are the energetics of the families of asanas including backbends, forward bends, twist, laterals, inversions, and arm balances.

How we can create smooth and creative transitions that make sense and are not merely choreographic.

What ways can we start to integrate intelligent use of pranayama and meditation.

Intelligent use of props.

How to apply mantra in class for desired energetic effects and focal points.

How can the gunas be shaped through intelligent sequencing.

Basic Ayurveda application of asana.

Guided shavasasna practices, prepare your class to rest.

Topics covered in this module:

~ Stress and our physical, mental, and energetic bodies.

~ The roots of unconscious habits and patterns.

~ Rewriting guiding principles of how we live.

~ Yoga Nidra and the Yoga Sutras.
